These were the stunning images created by stylist, Tasha Farrington and photographer Adam Zivo for a spread in Auxiliary Magazine a few months back. The landscape is downtown Toronto, near my studio location.Definitely looks more interesting captured on film.The designers featured in "Dissension" are mostly local talent including Victory & Vice and my alter-ego collection, Futurstate. Hope you enjoy them!

An all-black colour palette in mixed textures dominated for designer Laura Stewart's debut runway show of Victory & Vice last week at [FAT]. Fab details like zippers, leather straps and cutouts added a little edge to this collection of feminine frocks (many with beautiful draping) and wearable separates.

TORONTO: Rising fashion label Victory & Vice is set to showcase their latest womenswear collection at the 2012 Fashion Arts Toronto week -|FAT|. The first time runway show for Victory & Vice will entice viewers with their distinctively refined yet raw style. Intrinsically dark in nature, expect an array of sultry sophisticated dresses, extremely curve-enhancing structured separates, and fluid knitwear that artfully exposes and conceals the body. Hidden within are influences of military uniforms, fetishism, and the avant garde. 

The look of Victory & Vice is powerful and sharp, both pristine and refined with just the right amount of grit - a vision of deconstructed elegance. The contemporary style with its professional demeanor, transitions quite seamlessly from work to an evening on the town. Classic, yet forward the black on black look is stunning in its mix of textures. Smooth and modern surfaces combine effortlessly with earthy tactile elements creating the dynamic look of urban femininity. It's a landscape infused with post-modern sensibilities with historical construction and attention to detail. Contributing to the local economy the collection is designed and made exclusively in Toronto, Canada. 

About |FAT| Arts & Fashion Week 

A platform for inventive, pioneering and contemporary expression. This annual multi-arts event features 200 national and international fashion designers, visual artists, bands and performers each year. The festival delivers a packed schedule of runway shows, live performances, music, photography exhibits, video screenings and installation exhibits, to celebrate leaders in a wide range of art forms. Glimpse: Obscura Scarf

OBSCURA, a gorgeous, monochromatic silk scarf to dress up even the darkest of days. A haunting and mysterious design of sumptuous silk make it a go to piece for the cool autumn days. An ease to style this several ways and bring a unique aspect to any outfit.

PROCESS: This digital print silk scarf was designed in house after an afternoon of experimenting with ink block prints. After many discoveries and psychological assessments of what was seen, our favourite was choose and scanned. It was then rearranged into a beatuiful layered design, and sent off the the printers. Such an exciting moment when the fabric arrived, is was then stitched up and named it Obscura.
 

Some of our early observations were of horned demons, giraffes, and fairies. What do you see?

Glimpse: Velocity Top

Sometimes a design goes as planned, starting as a well thought out idea and becoming exactly what was initially envisioned by the designer. Sometimes a loose concept can be transformed into something unexpected when a designer discovers a fabric, a colour, a pattern, or a piece of hardware that provides the final push of inspiration, the missing piece that was needed to create something brilliant.

The Victory & Vice Velocity top began as a good idea, create a garment that is loose, comfortable, slightly casual, that still appears clean and sharp and makes the wearer feel sexy and confident. The slouchy top went through stages of experimentation, becoming slightly deconstructed with the exposed grosgrain ribbon detail. It wasn't until Victory & Vice fell head over heels for the perfect hardware, sleek, square and silver, that the garment transformed into the chic cinched top pictured below.

Glimpse: Quinn Dress

A reoccurring theme present in the VS. collection is the tension and mood created when opposite characteristics are paired together. An example of this theme experimented with throughout the collection is structure vs. drape/movement. The contrast between the fluidity and elegance of draped material and the rigidity and strength of form-fitting structure creates a crisp, contemporary air throughout the collection.

The Quinn dress, a simple, elegant black dress, features a flowing cowl neck and short loose cap sleeves. Directly beneath the bust the movement of the loose top is restrained by a structured high waist extending into a form-fitting skirt. Exploring the tension between the fluid top and the structured bottom has resulted in a modern, chic little black dress.

Glimpse: Dada Top

In the world of design it is important to allow yourself to find inspiration and value in everything you encounter. You should be able to explore the beauty of every seemingly useless item, whether it is a piece of garbage, a broken window, a construction site or a concrete slab. Beauty that does not immediately hit you in the face, but instead takes a few moments to uncover, and forces you to contemplate whether it is in fact beautiful, is often the most satisfying kind. It takes a certain amount of creativity and demented thinking in order to embrace the beauty of the unusual.
